What we do

child's hand drawing

The Art Room offers art as therapy to children and young people between the ages of 7 and 15, using art to raise their self-esteem, self-confidence and independence. Most are disengaged from mainstream education, disruptive or withdrawn and all have been identified as needing special time away from their school. Many of the students have specific learning difficulties or have had an interrupted education. Some have recently arrived in this country, some are prime carers within their family, others are ‘looked-after’ children (children in care).

The Art Room:

  • Offers respite from their pressured lives
  • Supports children in developing positive relationships
  • Enables them to express themselves by engaging in different forms of creative artwork
  • Provides an opportunity to reengage with mainstream education

The Art Room has demonstrated that in a caring and creative environment the most challenging children can ‘learn and achieve through art’. The methodology has been tried and tested in specialist and mainstream schools and the results have been very positive.
