Come and Sing 2008: Verdi's Requiem

The Art Room's third “Come and Sing” event took place on Saturday 2 February, when singers performed Verdi's “Requiem” at the Sheldonian Theatre.

This concert raised a fantastic £7,600 for The Art Room. Our thanks go to Robert Dean and our soloists, all the singers, and Oxford Sinfonia Orchestra for making this such a successful event. We are also very grateful to our sponsors: Blackwell Publishing, Berman Guedes Stretton, Oxford Economics, RM and Savills for their generous support.

'What a fantastic experience to sing beautiful music in a wonderful venue with top quality musicians and soloists, not to mention a conductor who knows just how to get the best out of a 'scratch' choir. All the sopranos are coming back for more next year – we loved it!

Julia Esplen – singer

Robert Dean's passion and experience produced an unforgettable performance from 200-plus singers whose only common factor was their willingness to have a go. I loved every minute of it.

Georgina Ferry, singer

The Requiem was an absolutely stunning experience. A huge privilege to be in the middle of such a wonderful and overpowering sound.

Mary Franklin – singer

Soloists

We thought the whole event was quite inspirational. We just loved the combination of the passion of the choir, the architectural setting, the quality of the musicians and singers, and all in a good cause. …  All in all a stunning success and a genuinely memorable event.

Paddy Coulter – audience

Such a great piece, wonderful surroundings and in the end, as I said on the night, everyone should be very proud with the way the concert went. It was a great thing to be part of.

Simon Thorpe – Bass soloist

Congratulations to you all – it was a marvellous effort all round!
