The Art Room Book
The Art Room Book sets out to suggest ways in which teachers, parents, carers and everyone who works with children can use art to inspire independence and self-confidence.
We’ve chosen 12 easy-to-achieve projects, each of which transforms an unremarkable object into something unique. Using materials which come either cheap or completely free, plastic bottles transmogrify into perky puppets, chairs become sumptuous thrones, shoe boxes change into fabulous picture frames. In this book, art is another word for magic.
All the projects work across the curriculum. Investigate the science of a rainbow while exploring its colour and texture, discover geometry with The Fish Who Could Wish, extend literacy skills using puppets and storytelling, encourage citizenship by creating a ‘friendship chair’, promote IT by using the internet to research the lives of famous artists.
The art ideas in this book are a springboard into so many other areas. Some are group projects aimed at promoting cooperation, pleasure in each other’s ideas and pride in a shared result, which can be placed in a prominent place to be admired by all. Others are for individual expression and creativity, producing pieces of artwork that the children cherish and are proud to take home.
