These fish shoes were created by students at The Art Room. A local shoe shop – Sassi in the High Street in Oxford – donated 8 pairs of brand new sandals to The Art Room which the children transformed into exotic shoes. Their work was inspired by the books "Hooray for Fish" by Lucy Cousins and "the Fish who could Wish" by John Bush and illustrated by Korky Paul.

Each child was given a shoe, and in their own distinct style they transformed it into the most unusual fish. This project incorporated literacy and creativity and as part of Oxfordshire Artweeks we exhibited them in the window of Sassi. The success of the children’s work was celebrated by everyone who walked past the shop and many passers-by offered to buy the shoes.

However these shoes were not for sale: the children were keen to keep their masterpieces to take back to school and eventually to their homes. This was an exciting project which provided huge potential for creativity and self-expression and, as The Art Room's aim is to raise the children's confidence and independence, it proved to be an enormous success.
